Popular culture and GW

I got these in my late 20's. I am a pretty successful gal and have always been rather conservative sexually, and I was devistated when I got this diagnosis. Back in my day...in high school...they made it a point to tell us to be scared ofAIDS....but I never thought this would be an issue. Even when I studied health science as an undergrad, I didn't think "good girls" could get this. As many of you know, thats wrong. The problem is, I'm old enough to know that popular culture promotes promiscuity, one-night-stands, getting wasted and partying WAY more now than it did back in the day. All this MTV crap and the stuff I catch a glimpse of in women's "fashion" magazines make it seem like its totally great and normal to skank around. So I'm terrified thinking about the message this sends to young people. This was so traumatic to me at 27...I don't know how those of you who are dealing with this at 17...or even 20...god forbid even younger...are dealing with this. Pop culture and Cosmo magazine are doing us a sick disservice. An STD that you get despite condom use, and even without penetration is RAMPANT and this message needs to be more clear in the midst of glamorizing people getting wasted and hooking up. If I was careful and got this...I shudder to think what is possible for people who have a less careful philosophy of sex.

can I ask you a question? Will you
tell a new partner even if you've been
clear for a year?

12/16/2003 1:32:45 PM -
....havn't decided yet...so I'm
keeping my pants on until I do
decide. I probably will.

12/16/2003 2:04:00 PM -
amy_200375...I would like to talk.

12/16/2003 2:17:13 PM -
is that an email address? I'm not
sure how to contact you, I wouldn't
mind doing so but I am trying to
protect my identity

12/16/2003 2:24:35 PM -
amy_200375@hotmail.com If you're
trying to protect your identity, you
could always just sign up for a new e-
mail address in hotmail...don't put
your real name I'm in Canada - are
you in the US?

12/16/2003 2:27:01 PM -
to the poster of this message...I
couldn't agree with you more!!!

12/16/2003 2:42:00 PM -
I agree too. But I think the REAL
reason people should be more choosy
about sex is that it's just sad to waste
it on entertainment instead of love. THe
kind of emptiness I felt when sleeping
around was worse than GWs.

12/16/2003 2:42:48 PM -
original poster - why don't you write an
essay or letter about this and send it
to Cosmo or GQ?

12/16/2003 2:43:43 PM -
I agree, I'm 28, and not until now did I
know that transimission of this virus
was so easily done. I took sex ed
classes in college -- WHY wasn't this
covered? I'm bitter now when I hear
people talk about "Just use a condom and
everything will be safe." BULLSH*T!!!
I guess I can at least try to educate my
friends and social circle on this to try
and make a diference.

12/16/2003 2:44:46 PM -
MAXIM magazine would be a good one too.
I swear 50% of that magazine just gives
guys tips on how to bed women.

12/16/2003 3:00:09 PM -
Thaks you guys, this is awsome. I am
the orignial threader and am working
on a doctoral dissertation on a way to
make this info more available to
middle schoolers

12/16/2003 7:12:26 PM - Sarah
So much attention has been given to
HIV that other much more common STIs
have been almost forgotten. The mantra
is "Use a condom" - but that doesn't
always protect a person, in the cases
of herpes and HPV.

12/16/2003 8:34:24 PM - Craig
I've always used a condom. Never NOT
used one and here I am. So don't
forget you can also get HERPES
with "safe sex".

12/16/2003 10:13:25 PM -
I have shared my story with very good
friends and it does help sort of get
the word out to little circles here
and there. They have become advocates
along with me for spreading the word
about how easy it is to get this can
how it can happen to very nice,
careful people.

12/17/2003 2:55:02 PM -
I am 27 years old and I feel the same
way. I didn't consider GW as a risk
when I made the decision to have
protected sex.

12/17/2003 5:10:19 PM -
...and its like, a nightmare when you
discover it but don't have the
knowledge about it we are starting to
slowly uncover now.

12/17/2003 7:05:52 PM -
Awesome post. I couldnt agree more.
Todays culture is so sexually
concentrated that I think most ppl dont
even think anything of taking random
ppl home with them. Also I agree that
HPV shouldn't be pushed aside as it has
been. Because of the lack of education
about it, it is running rampant and
soon I believe everyone will have it.

12/17/2003 11:10:15 PM -
ha..yeah and according to the
stats...we are very close to everyone
having it.

12/18/2003 7:45:36 PM -
scary shit

12/19/2003 6:44:09 PM - D
...and if everybody has it, we won't be
wasting our time writing about it. We
would then see it as the common cold
sore.. nearly everybody has it.
