Question:

I have visible genital warts. Is there a test or biopsy that can be done to determine which strains of the virus I am have?

No, the only way to tell what strain(s) of the HPV you have is by a DNA Genital Warts test. This is only done on "high risk" patients. Gential warts is caused by "low risk" strands.

Although it it not feasable to get a test to determine the strain of warts you have, if you are a female you should get regular paps because it is possible to determine if you have a strain of HPV that causes cervical cancer. If you are a male that''''s sexually active, it is advisable to recommend that your sexual partner get checked yearly too. Granted, the strains of HPV that cause gw are not the same strains that cause cancer, it is still possible to contract more than one strain of HPV (CDC.gov)
