Question:
I have HPV, but the kind that causes cervical dysplasia and not genital warts. however, me and my boyfriend have unprotected sex...he might become a carrier, but how much damage does it do to him. can he also start getting abnormal cells and possibly cancer...and he will never get warts from my strain right?

My boyfriend and I are in the same situation as you. I believe there is a risk of penile and anal cancer with men who have a dysplasia strand of HPV. But i think those types of cancer are really rare. So it isn''t something your boyfriend should loose sleep over. BUT he can still spread the virus to other women in the future who can get cancers from it. And unless you have more then one of strain of the virus then neither you nor your boyfriend should see any genital warts.

First of all, HPV DOES NOT "become" different types from person to person, as the last person said. You have most likely transferred the ONE strain of HPV to your boyfriend.
I''ve been researching this frustrating issue for 3 years now.
there are many types of HPV (over 70). many of them appear to do nothing at all. some cause warts in both genders (all warts: genital warts, oral warts, plantar warts, the ones on your hands, etc), known as the "low risk" hpv. some cause cervical dysplasia and thus do NOT affect men, however men can carry this one and transfer it to women.
There have been a few cases of men getting cancer believed to be from this HPV, but seeing how rare it is, my guess is that it's more from poor general health than
if the cervical dysplasia is left untreated, those cells on the cervix can become precancerous. everything so far is treatable. however, if she continues to ignore it, cancer may develop. that's why they call it "high risk" hpv. even though there is a good chance that it'll never go that far.
typically it takes 10-15 years to develop cancer after the first signs of cervical dysplasia (which shows up as an abnormal pap smear).
HPV can be present in anyone's physiology for any length of time without showing symptoms. In women, the Digene Hybrid Capture test, also known as the HPV DNA test, is available to detect the asymptomatic presence of HPV. The test is taken from a pap sample. Currently I have not been able to find away for men to be tested for asymptomatic HPV (and that really annoys me).
HPV is the cause of 99.7% of all cases of cervical cancer. So, it's bascially the REASON gynocology was invented. largely thanks to gynocology, cervical cancer has pretty much ped by 80% or so in the last 50 years.
so, the symptoms ARE threatening, but they ARE treatable. thousands upon thousands of women each year encounter this problem. that's how common HPV is.
HALF of women between 18 and 22 have HPV. This doesn't mean you should go around having sex with everyone and not telling them about it since it's so common. Everyone should know, so we can stop this stupid virus.
just remember that genital warts and cervical dysplasia do not come from the same disease. they're both HPV, but different strains.
however *scary music* there is ONE strain of HPV (#16 or #18 i believe) that can cause BOTH warts and abnormal paps, but they now have a vaccine for the most common strains (including this bad one). let's hope the FDA approves it.
here's the article on that:

hope that helps. good luck everyone.
