Question:

My Dr.s office just called and said I had an abnormal papsmear and HPV. I have never had any kind of genital warts, how is this possible?

You can have HPV without developing warts. There are two types of HPV - the high-risk strain(potential cervical cancer) and the kind that causes warts.

You likely have the high-risk strain, which is very treatable. Follow your doctors advice.

You cant tell that you have HPV from a pap smear.

Its highly unlikely that your doctor did any diagnostic work without a suspicion of HPV.

An abnormal pap can be caused by a variety of things including bacteria from recent sexual encounters.

I had HPV for over a year before I developed any genital warts. It is possible for you to have it even though you haven''t gotten any warts yet. And an abnormal pap may be evident of HPV, but the pap itself cannot tell you if you have it. You have to go for a follow up where they actually test part of your cervix. That's how I found out for sure I had it.

To the person who said you can not tell you Have HPV by an abnormal PAP is not completely correct. No, you can not tell by looking at the cells what exactly it is, but by the type of abnormalty the doctor can determine what most likely they should test for. Very very commonly abnormal an PAP is HPV. But that''s for the Doctor to determine
