Question:

Is it possible to be infected with the HPV virus any other way then sex?

I''ve been a virgin until about two years ago when I met my current girlfriend. I've never cheated on her and neither has she, she's only been with one other person before and he was also a virgin at that point. She has had two pap smear tests most recent one being about two months ago and both came out perfect. I've developed warts in the past month or so and cannot figure out how. Some people say its not sexualy trasmitted and then some say otherwise, why isnt everyone on the same page when it comes to that?

It''s rare to get it through oral sex.

Like the other person said... You shouldn't touch the infected person in their privates and then touch your private area. Wash your hand first.

I have heard you can get from wearing old clothes and sitting on toiliets.. but not sure about this. So be skeptical. I know one guy who had hpv and he was a little crazy. This guy would only have sex if his whole body was covered with a trash bag and also using a condom. I know it sounds a little paranoid but he was just being cautious. It really is hard to believe what works. I find myself going into health food stores and they offer different things. Some have suggested Tea Tree oil, rubbing raw potatos on the warts. Some suggest using homeopathics.
The key is to read up. Go and spend a day at the library or bookstore getting different viewpoints.

I AM 16 AND HAVE BEEN A VIRGIN UNTIL RECENTLY WITH MY BOYFRIEND OF OVER A YEAR AND 3 MONTHS ALTHOUGH I HAVE GIVEN ORAL SEX AND TOUCHED AND HAVE BEEN TOUCHED IN THE PAST...ME AND MY BOYFRIEND WERE BOTH VIRGINS WHEN WE WERE FIRST TOGETHER AND HAVE ONLY BEEN WITH EACHOTHER..ND HE HAS TOUCHED OTHER GIRLS AND HAS RECIVED ORAL BUT THATS IT AND I JUST GOT DIAGNOSED WITH HPV AND MY DR. TOLD ME THAT IT IS ONLY TRANSMITTED THOUGH HAVING SEX WITCH LEAD ME TO BELIVE THAT MY B/F HAD LIED ABOUT BEING A VIRGIN AND AFTER I TALKED TO HIM ABOUT IT HE CRIED AND SWORE ON HIS LIFE AND CRIED HIS EYES OUT PROMISING ME THAT IT WAS THE TRUTH SO I WAS WONDING IF ONE OF US COULD HAVE GOTTEN IT FORM PAST RELATIONSHIPS DOING ANY OF THE THINGS I MENTIONED.....THANKS

Yes, it is possible for HPV to be transmitted through genital contact or transitive genital contact. If someone touches an infected area and then touches themselves, there is a possibility they can contract HPV. Sex increases the chances as minor tears in the skin can open the door to transmission and/infection.

I got HPV thru my ex bf by sex. He wore a condom but lied saying he was a virgin. Now that I have it, I have no warts I didnt have any signs of it until about after 6 months when we had sex i got a pap smear and found out. 1 year later things are ok, doctors say im ok, i still have it. But I still cant get a question answered. If a guy fingers you, but didnt touch himself there right after....can he get it?

Alright, no one seems to know about this, and I think it''s very important, so I'm going to share it. You can believe me or not, but I expect that your doctors would know about this.

THERE ARE RARE CASES WHERE YOU CAN BE INFECTED WITHOUT HAVING SEXUAL CONTACT. IN THESE CASES, DOCTORS DON'T KNOW HOW A PERSON GETS IT.

I was a virgin (I had only kissed and that was it) and so was my husband when we got married. Neither of us have been unfaithful (which I guess you could choose to believe or not). It's been two years since we got married, and somehow I've contracted HPV, which probably means that he has it too, but he doesn't show anything, since I don't have the genital warts kind. The doctors I've talked to told me that this does happen that people can contract HPV without sexual contact. My doctor said he's even had virgins who have it. So it is possible, but chances are that unless you've been a virgin or monogamous all your life with someone who's also monogamous, you contracted it sexually.

My roommate just found out she had gential warts. She says she got it from sitting on a toilet seat at her friends house who also has this. I don''t have any signs/symptoms of it, but I know they don't come right away...I was wondering if I could get it from sitting on the same toilet seat as my roommate? I have booked a doctors appointment, but I just want to know if I really have something to be worried about? Some say you can only get it through skin to skin contact, and others say there are many different ways...I'd just love an answer...

2/28/2007

!

There are two ways that you can get infected: 1. Had sex with an infected person. 2. Mother passed it to you through birth canal. That means that your birth mother had to have you naturally.

2/9/2003

!

so is it safe to assume that you can get it from mouth-to-mouth contact (i.e. kissing, or in this particular case, drinking from the same cup)? I guess what i''m asking is can it be transferred via saliva?

I am so darn confused. I don''t know how I got the STD.I am 34 wks. pregnant and in the beginning my papsmear was normal. 4 months later I broke out with these nasty bumps everywhere. I asked my doctor if I was able to get it from touching someone else's lesions. He said no. It's only sexually transmitted. In the beginning of my pregnancy...I remember that I had waxed my bf's and his friends chest and lower abdominal areas. Me and my boyfriend both saw bumps that look very familiar to what we have now. They were also bleeding from waxing. I don't know if the doctor knows what he is talking about or not. Cause he also said that he could do nothing for it while I'm pregnant. I have been doing research and I found that there are treatments for it during pregnancy. I dont know who to believe.

First of all, you can have HPV without having external warts. 1 in 3 people have HPV. Most people dont know they have it. Sencod of all warts are spread through skin to skin contact. Thats all it takes. YOU DONT HAVE TO HAVE SEX. It is possable to get it simpy by rubbing genatals, typically people dont do that without haveing sex but it does happen. You need to be carefull. There are many many reasons to have bumps down there that you will read look like warts, but there isnt any way to tell unless you are seen by a doc. Furthermore, the HPV virus is simply the virus that causes warts. Normal warts on you hand, plantar warts on your feet, etc.etc. There are over 100 strands of it. only 30 of them affect the area in question, the rest are just your average every day warts. (by the way all a "wart" is is extra skin. Nothing to worry about. Its when females get hpv on thier cervix you have to pay attention and get regular paps to rule out cancer. It generaly dosent affect men othere than them being carriers, and possable visable warts wich are just removed.

5/22/2004

!

of course. any skin to skin contact on the infected virus can lead to gettin it

8/13/2003

!

YES YES YES YES YES I have HPV and am a virgin who''s never even kissed anyone. I don't drink alcohol because it's nasty and I don't smoke. My doctor said I must be genetically predisposed to the virus. My mother and father said they had "a wart" once, but neither of them have warts now. I initially developed common warts on the hands, starting at age 18. But now, about 4 years later, they have spread to the roof of my mouth and the genital area. They may even be in my throat, but due to EXTREME gag reflex and anxiety, I can't voluntarily be tested by throat culture or the like. Doctors, dermatologists, and dentists all say there's just not much they can do. One doctor told me, "if the warts want to be there, then there's nothing that can be done." She told me the virus never goes away once it's inside you. Despite the bad news I appreciated her honesty.

My situation should be proof, HPV is extremely contagious, not just through sex. I've never had much skin-to-skin contact with anyone. Who knows how this virus invaded my body?

10/19/2004

!

is it possible to just have a regular wart on the genital area without it being a hpv or related to cancer? it would help calm my nerves you kno cause I aint goin to no doctor.

2/5/2007

!

Yes, I am a virgin and I have anal warts, which is the same as gential warts. You can use a towel that someone with genital warts has used, you can get it from toiletes and also just by waking hands with someone with it then going to the bathroom. It is VERY contagious, so be careful if you have it.

can you get hpv use the same soap

11/2/2007

yes...
I got it from having a woman rub her wart, and then rub my penis afterwards.. we never had sex. She did this purposely to me, and then laughed at me a few weeks after the relationship ended.

I had unprotected sex with someone who''s previous partner had the HPV disease, along with warts. He had unprotected sex with her, but about a week ago he went to the doctor and got tested and said somehow he didn't contract HPV...is this possible? I'm very worried, not only because I would be devastated to find out I have a std that won't go away, but I'm also 5 months pregnant.

I was a virgin when married my husband. When I came back to him after we were seperated for a few weeks, I started to have little bumps in my virginal areas, it burnt when I pee. My husband did not blame or excuse me anything, though I was very mad and wondering how I got it from. I went see doctors, one said it was just a bacteria and I could catch it anywhere. 2nd one said it''s a STD, only caught it from sex. My husband was mad at the second Dr. as it might make me think I got it from my husband. I could not sleep and cried at the middle of the night wondering why I had this while I was staying at my girlfriend's house all the time and did not have sex with anybody.

Then I remembered that there was one time, my girlfriend had her period, she used a plastic tampon and I saw a lot of Genital Warts in the toilet when I went to the bathroom. I flushed the toilet for her and then sat right on the toilet. When I realized the bumps in my virginal areas, I told her and she said she had the same problem, she recommended to see a doctor. That's where I think I got the bacteria from.

I'm now 16 weeks pregnant. Last OB appointment, my doctor told me that I had an abnormal PAP, there are changes of my cells and mentioned about Human Papilloma Virus, which could cause cancer. I was shock and very sad hearing it.

I told my husband, he once again said he did not have sex with other girls and is here to support me. I believe my husband! But afraid that I'll pass the virus to him if we continuely have sex.

I feel better knowing that some virgins also have HPV, which can prove that I caught the virus somehow without having sexual contacts with someone else.

However, the Dr. told me that I'll have to wait until I deliver then they will do something about this.

All I hope is that I won't pass the virus to my infant.

yup, me and my bf who were both virgins had sex I got hpv,i read some and i found out that in rare cases a mother can give it to her baby during child birth, that''s the only plausable way i can think he got it. the virus can be dormant for years but once you come in contact with someone else they can pass it on even if they have never had symptoms or anything.

just think i'm 14 and have to deal with this but i want to get my story out so that younger kids can be educated to be safe, i don't blame him that i got it b/c he didn't know.

end of story

I hate to be a Chicken Little here but FOR THOSE VIRGINS WITH HPV one seriously has to consider the possibility of sexual molestation during childhood. I hate to even suggest it but I am a geneticist and can guarantee that it is not a genetic disorder. Some of the other hypotheses being presented, clothing or towels, are possible but highly unlikely.

If a wart bursts, and any product (puss/Genital Warts) is left on the hand of the infected person, contact through that could potentially infect you

Yes you can get HPV thru birth. My grandaughter did get the virus. People have to relize this is getting to be a real problem. These viruses are becoming out of control. My grandaughter died in Jan of HPV. What happens is this virus settled in her throat by her vocal cords. This is where the tumors would grow. She had 27 surgeries to remove them. It is sad to see a baby to go thru this. It just happen that hers was more aggressive. It is another thing for either the male or female to "cheat" on each other. Even thow this was rare for what happen to my grandaughter people need to stop and think that something could follow their acts. In the end a baby suffered. AND believe me a baby''s Genital Warts is a hard thing to deal with.

i am a virgin .. who had never had intercourse .. I was recently diagnosed with hpv and cervical dysplasia. when i told my doctor, she informed me that she had one other patient who was a virgin and had warts. i have a few family members who have been diagnosed with cervical dysplasia as well .. which leads me to believe it could possibly be hereditary .... but i suppose until people starting Genital Warts of hpv at an alarming rate sufferers won''t be finding out the source of the virus.

ATTENTION ENTERTAINERS I WAS an entertainer at an all nude club, I went to work there clear of all STD''s. After a few months of working I noticed small bumps that turned out to be HPV. I went to go get tested and they said that they have had other women from where I worked gone in to get tested and it turned out they had HPV. I am not saying that I am 100% sure that I contracted them there, but my doctor says that it is quite possible. - so to anyone who dances naked around a pole be very wary to keep yourselves and others around you safe and clean.

To clarify an answer below, there are cases of women having c-sections & the baby is infected with hpv....so, a vaginal birth is not the only way of transmission when pregnant. There are also cases of women testing negative for hpv & their baby tests positive. There are also cases of adults with hpv in the respiratory tract that have never engaged in oral sex. There are many unkowns here so saying there are two ways of transmission is not necessarily factual.

The only way you can get HPV (genital wart kind) through clothing, and only maybe, is if you put on someone''s used underwear. The residue from a wart has to make it into a break or tear in your skin. IE: if you have a cut or scGenital Warts in your bikini area and then wear someone else's underwear. It's so remote I can't see that it's probable. Possible, maybe so, but probable? No.

4/19/2004

I was 11 or 12 when I caught the virus i don''t think I'd even kissed a girl. I was most definately a virgin so I guess you it is possible.

6/24/2005

!

I recently had a scare, after finding a small wart on my husband, and few on the inside if my thigh. My first thought was that my husband must be having an affair if he had caught a STD. I was worried for a week, until I went to the appointment I had made at the clinic.
When I got there, the doctor looked at me as if I was stupid. Warts is a virus and will live in your system for years. It is passed only through skin to skin contact. I have had warts on my hands that have come up and gone away again from an early age. I passed the virus onto my husband, and I caught it back from his penis. Some people''s immune sysyem just can not cope with the virus as well as others, and it will stay with you for life.
So, yes it is possible to catch the virus in a non sexual way, but visit a doctor to make sure, they can treat the wart, but not the virus.

11/7/2005

!

To the lady with the recent scare:
From what I''ve read, warts on the hand comes from a different strain of HPV than the one that causes genital warts. Is that wrong? Maybe there's some strickly confined to hands, some strickly confined to genitals, and some that are flexible in choosing a body part to fester on.

11/15/2005

!

I don''t think you can get hpv any other way than having sexual intercourse. it's spread from having sex w/ an infected partner.

2/15/2006

!

I am in this nightmare: At least one strain of this virus, one I am carrying, is extremely virulent. It is quite capable of passing through intact skin and I am able to watch this occur in a matter of hours from one finger on my hand to the next. The clear liquid excreted from the warts is not readily suseptible to air as most viruses are and may remain intact on surfaces, such as toilet seats, indefinitely. I was consciously aware of the moment I contracted the virus by touching a wart on another''s back with my left index finger. I watched it spread along the length of my finger during the next 48 hours and I considered amputating my finger to avoid broader exposure. Of course, I chickened out at this and allowed the virus to continue on its course. The warts I have are not easily visible and resemble acne or mosquito bites. Three seperate tests confirm that this is herpes and hepatitis negative. No other known pathogen matches this disease. I have been infected for almost 1 year to date and I have reoccuring puss filled abscesses the size of quarters on my inner thighs as well as excessive mucus discharge from my eyes (especially during sleep), an orange shift in the color of my urine, anal bleeding, transient pains in my chest and kidneys, swollen and tender throat lymph nodes and general malaise uncharacteristic of my personality. About the only place these warts will not appear is on my genitals and in my mouth but they do appear drawn to the sensory organs and cartiledge.

My advice to you:
1.) Do not ever sit on a toilet that is not your own without covering it.
2.) Abandon the custom of shaking bare hands.

I have a molecular biology background and this type of virus replicates extremely rapidly, is not a seemingly choosy eater and has all the hardiness of influenza. It is killing me but not fast enough to prevent me from being its vector. One acquaintance I merely shook hands with has already contracted the same virus through this contact although I warned him not to: he insisted. The placement of the warts seems almost random across the skin. They are much worse than they appear. Good luck to you.

Has anyone any info on whether there is any research on how long the virus can live outside the body, eg on discarded clothng, towels, upholstery etc.

Like others here, I have no idea of how I picked up the virus as I have not been promiscuous for decades and my longtime partner shows no sign of having HPV. But some posts on the web say the virus can be dormant for many years. If the warts disappear, does it mean that one can resume sexual relations?

My proctologist says that unless my partner touches my anal warts and then herself it is unlikely she will contract HVP. But I wonder ...

He also said it might just be possible but extremely unlikely to have contraced the disease if I had shaken hands with someone who had the virus on their hand and I then touched my anal area.

10/25/2006

!

Yes you can transfer it from one part of your body to another I was a virgin at the age of 17 I had a plantar wart on my foot, that I kept picking I was on tablets at the time for acne this caused me to develop trush pretty bad I had it in my mouth and down south my imunne system was knocked down really low I was so bad I had small cuts from scratching myself in my sleep I know for sure that I gave myself HPV from my foot I now have to get wire loop excision for pre cancerous cells.
Just bad luck I suppose.
IT IS NOT ONLY CAUSED BY SEX! I know this for sure.

Sure it is. there are 2 drugs in phase 3 testing that will be available possibly by the end of 2006 that are 100% effective against HPV 6,11,16 and 18. they are produced by the Mercx & Co. and Glaxosmithkline. The one from Glaxosmithkline is currently in the FDA testing labs.

for all of you who think you can get it from sitting on a toilet....YOU CAN NOT.
i asked my doctor and he shook his head and told me to stop reading Genital Warts from the internet unless it is a legit site written by doctors.
Just want to let you know you can not get it from a toilet seat unless someone opens a blister and rubs it on the seat and you rub yourself against it soon after...which is not usual. and normally when you sit on a toilet seat your legs and side of your butt touch the seat not anything else. so it is really rare.

HPV is a virus, so many people can ahve it but they don''t develop it. If you have a strong immune system your body will battle the virus. Men and women can get the virus in their genitals but women can face cervix cancer if it gets advanced, there are 4 types of hpv, in the fourth one requires that the uterous will be removed.

You can get warts by sitting in a toilet that is not yours since water from the inside can jump and just by touching your skin you will get it. If the warts arrive to the cervix (the entrance of the uterous) you can develop cervix cancer.

Cervix cancer is one of the worse type of cancer, saying that you don't feel pain until it is too late, that's why a papsmear is recommended in women after their first intercourse of after they are 21.

You can get hpv in your thoat, but the treatment there is with antibiotics, if it is too advanced it becomes another type of cancer.

It is recommended to don't have oral sex after you and your partner have been diagnosticated with hpv. You can keep having regular sexual relations since both are already infected and the treatment is totaly difent than the one in the genitals.

This is very slightly off topic but to previous posts mentioning doctors giving the wrong answers.
not many people know that tears come from the outer corners of ones'''' eyes and flow to the inner corners and down into the nasal passage through little ducts, long story short I was explaining this to my gf she didn''t believe me and asked the doctor very plainly after our session, "where at in your eyes do tears come from" and and pointed to where they drain into the nose and not to where they come from, and in turn giving her the wrong answer.
I later showed her a diagram online explaining it, shouldn''t any doctor know simple human anatomy?

I think i may have also givin myself genital warts from having a planter wart on my foot when i was like 14. I had the bad habit of picking at it and (like all 14 year olds) playing with my Genital Warts.
Warts appeard on my penis and i hadnt had sex.
I stupidly didnt go to a doctor because i dindt think it could be possible and thought they would go away.
I did mention to my mum(wasnt close to my dad) that i had a lump and she laughed and said "once you''''ve go them, youve got them for life" and she wasnt mean she said it laughing beause she knew that i hadnt had any experiance with girls.
They stayed teh same for a long time, i pretty much diagonosed myself from researching on the internet and when i seen there was no cure, only treatment i letf it, plus i didnt want to face it.
They ended up spreading pretty badly..

I find it funny that people say the doctor told me theres no way to get HPV other then sex unless ... ok so right there your saying that there is a chance, im very worried because im pregnant and im just finding out I have HPV, so its the kind that does nothing and she said it should go away on its own, to calm me down she called it a bacteria at 1st but im not dumb it took about 5 questions for her to even tell me what it was. So basicly what im trying to say is DR. are only human and they dont know everything, she told me that my baby wont be affected by this!! Has anybody had children while infected with HPV??? and if you have can you let me know if they had anything on there skin or in there body??? (And i too have been with the same man for 3 years, i get my yearly exams and dont sleep around so this could happen to anybody)

Supposedly it can lie dormant and undetected in people. This information could be outdated since it was about 4 years ago since I had hpv, but it often goes undetected in men. The great thing is there are fantastic vaccines called Guardasil that can prevent you from even contracting most common strands of HPV. I contracted it, had to get it burned from my cervix. I got the vaccinations (a series of three shots) and haven''''t had any problems since. Supposedly once you get it and it''s run its course or you''ve gotten ''rid'' of it, you shouldn''t be able to be reinfected with the same strain. (There are several different types of HPV) I would recommend for any and every female out there to get the Guardasil vaccination. I will never regret having gotten it. :)
